Hire AI Developers in Colombia: Build Your Nearshore AI Team

US companies can hire AI developers in Colombia in three ways: directly through a Colombian entity or employer of record, as independent contractors, or through a nearshore AI partner that supplies a managed team. Colombia ranks 4th of 19 countries in the Latin American AI Index. It shares your US working hours, but senior AI talent is scarce, so the model, contract terms on IP and data, and evidence of how a team tests and measures AI work matter more than the hourly rate. A partner can usually start a team in one to two weeks.

Demand for AI skills keeps rising. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 22% growth for computer and information research scientists from 2025 to 2035, and many of those hires will go to teams that are not yet sure how to build in production. Gartner predicts that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027, citing costs, unclear value, and weak risk controls. Hiring well is the difference.

Sancrisoft is a nearshore AI development company based in Medellín, Colombia, that builds web, mobile, and AI products for US teams. This guide is for decision-makers who have decided to hire in Colombia and need to choose how. It does not repeat the basics: for role definitions and skill tests, see our guide to hiring AI engineers in Latin America; for the full process, our step-by-step guide to hiring an AI development team in LATAM; and for the city view, our guide to hiring developers in Medellín.

Why Hire AI Developers in Colombia? What the Data Shows

Five public signals describe the market. Each one comes with what it means for a hiring decision.

SignalDataWhat it means for you
AI maturityColombia ranks 4th of 19 countries in the latest Latin American AI Index (ILIA), with a score of 55.84, up 3.2 points.A credible regional AI ecosystem, not a frontier hub.
Research baseMinTIC cities 1,896 active AI researchers and 993 publications as part of Colombia's third-place showing in research.A local academic pipeline to recruit from.
PolicyCONPES 4144, approved on February 14, 2025, is the national AI roadmap: six axes and more than 100 actions through 2030.Public support for AI skills and adoption.
Training pipelineMINTIC reports 35,148 people certified in AI through Talento TECH (page updated July 2026), within an intensive bootcamp-style program.A growing entry-level pool. Senior depth still has to be verified person by person.
Talent gapA MinTIC and Fedesoft study estimates a gap of about 85,000 digital professionals. Good engineers have options, so speed and retention matter.

Read together, the picture is a market with real momentum and thin senior supply. That is why many US teams hire through a partner that already employs vetted engineers. Our guide to nearshore software development in Colombia covers the country-level case, including time zone, trade framework, and costs.

What Should Your Colombian AI Team Look Like?

Most failed AI hires start with a job title instead of a use case. Start from what you need to ship, then pick the roles.

What you are buildingCore rolesAdd when
Internal assistant or search (RAG)AI engineer with retrieval and evaluation experience, plus a full-stack engineer. Answers need regression testing: add QA
AI agents and workflow automationAI engineer plus a backend engineer.Agents can act on real systems: add a security reviewer and human approval steps.
Predictive or classic ML modelML engineer plus a data engineer. The model must run in production: add DevOps or MLOps.
AI features in a productAn AI engineer working with your web or mobile engineers. UX decisions about uncertainty and errors: add a designer.
Regulated data (health, finance)Any team above, plus a security and compliance lead. Protected data is in scope, as in healthcare and HIPAA work.

A typical starting team is three people: one senior AI engineer, one mid-level full-stack engineer, and one engineer who covers testing and delivery. Our AI development service is organized the same way.

How Can You Hire AI Developers in Colombia? Three Routes

RouteHow it worksWho carries complianceBest when
Direct hireYou employ engineers through a Colombian entity or an employer of record. You, or the employer of record. You are building a permanent in-house team and can manage it.
Independent contractorsIndividuals invoice you under service agreements.You. Misclassification is the main risk.A short, narrow task with clear deliverables.
Nearshore AI partnerA partner employs the engineers and supplies a dedicated team through nearshore staff augmentation or scoped project delivery. The partner, under your contract. You need a team fast, with QA and delivery management included.

Be careful with the contractor route. Colombian labor law looks at the real relationship, not the label: Law 2466 of 2025 reinforced this in Article 59A of the Labor Code, and US tax authorities apply their own test, explained in IRS Topic 762. We cover the legal models in depth in our Medellín hiring guide, and the wider LATAM options in our complete guide to hiring LATAM developers. This is general information, not legal advice.

How Much Does It Cost to Hire AI Developers in Colombia?

The BLS does not publish a separate category for AI engineers, so any US benchmark is approximate. Its closest figures are a median wage of $140,300 for computer and information research scientists and $135,980 for software developers (May 2025). Benefits add about 30% of total compensation for US private employers. The table applies those figures to a three-person AI team and compares them with Sancrisoft’s own nearshore estimates.

Monthly cost, three-person AI teamUS in-house (BLS medians, with benefits)Colombia nearshore partner (Sancrisoft estimates, all-in)
1 AI engineerAbout $16,700$12,000-$20,000 (senior)
2 software engineersAbout $32,400 ($16,200 each)$14,000-$24,000 ($7,000-$12,000 each, mid-level)
TotalAbout $49,100$26,000-$44,000
Not includedRecruiting, equipment, idle time, management. What the rate covers varies by partner; confirm management and QA.

On these assumptions, the nearshore team costs roughly 10% to 47% less, a wide range that depends on seniority. US medians blend all experience levels, so a senior specialist in a competitive market can sit above them, and the table leaves out recruiting and idle time, which favor a partner. These nearshore figures are Sancrisoft’s own, not a third-party benchmark. For a public reference point, our Clutch profile lists $50–$99 per hour, which is about $8,000–$15,800 per month at 160 hours. Put simply, the case for Colombia is speed and flexibility as much as price.

Budget the model and infrastructure costs separately. Usage fees for LLM APIs, vector databases, and cloud compute are not part of any team rate, and they grow with traffic. Keep those accounts in your own name, set a monthly cap, and ask the team to report cost per request so you can forecast before launch.

What Should You Protect When AI Developers Work Across Borders?

AI work adds risks that ordinary outsourcing contracts miss. Four are worth writing down before the first commit.

  • Ownership of everything the team produces. Assign code, prompts, evaluation sets, datasets, and fine-tuned models to your company in writing, using the work-made-for-hire principles in the US Copyright Office’s Circular 30. The Office’s report on copyrightability (January 29, 2025) found that AI output is protected only where a human author determined sufficient expressive elements, and that prompts alone are not enough. Ask your partner to keep records of human design and review.
  • Personal data in prompts and training. Colombia’s data protection law, Law 1581 of 2012, and the SIC’s Circular 002 of August 21, 2024 on AI systems call for privacy by design and documented impact assessments for high-risk processing. Whether they apply to your project depends on where data is processed, so have counsel confirm. For health data, add your own HIPAA obligations.
  • A shared risk language. Use the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and its Generative AI Profile, plus the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications, as the checklist for design reviews.
  • Certifications stated precisely. Ask whether the partner holds a SOC 2 report or ISO/IEC 27001 certification, and what exactly it covers. Keep API keys and model access under your own accounts.

How Do You Vet AI Developers Before You Sign?

Interviews alone cannot show whether an AI feature will hold up in production, so ask candidates, and any partner, to show how they work. The DORA 2025 research found that AI amplifies a team’s existing strengths and weaknesses, and Anthropic’s guidance on building effective agents favors simple, composable patterns before complex ones. In the technical conversation, ask the engineers who would do the work to walk you through five things from past projects:

  1. How they build an evaluation set. Ask for an example: how many real examples they use and how they define a good answer, agreed with the client.
  2. How they report progress. Scores before and after each change, so progress is measured rather than described.
  3. How they track cost and latency. Cost per request and response time against a budget the client sets.
  4. How they test security. Prompt injection and data-leak checks mapped to the OWASP list.
  5. How they document decisions. A decision log that explains each design choice, written so your own engineers can take over.

Our own delivery follows Spec, Build, Verify, which we call Conduct. In company-reported examples, one engineer built a production payroll system in 28 working days (see the full case study), and a team added MFA to a telehealth platform in about four days of work with Claude Code, with about 85% setup completion and no critical findings in the penetration test. These are single projects, so treat them as examples of the process, not guarantees. The same discipline applies to AI features, as described in our AI software development workflow. For vendor criteria beyond this checklist, see what to look for in a nearshore AI development company.

What Should the First 90 Days Look Like?

A clear plan keeps an AI project from drifting into open-ended research. This is the shape we recommend, with the delivery metrics from DORA’s research (lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and recovery time) tracked from the first week.

WindowWhat the team deliversWhat you decide
Days 1-14Kickoff: scope and success criteria, evaluation set and baseline, a first working slice, cost and latency numbers, security tests.Review the measured results, then confirm the scope, change it, or stop.
Days 15-45A first production slice behind a feature flag, with monitoring, automated tests, and a documented architecture. Whether quality and cost per request meet your thresholds.
Days 46-90Hardening, a wider rollout, runbooks and a handover plan, plus a retrospective on what to automate next.Whether to grow the team, keep it stable, or transfer ownership to your engineers.

Stopping at a review point is a valid outcome. A partner that tells you early that an idea will not work at an acceptable cost has saved you more than one that keeps building.

What Are the Trade-Offs of Hiring AI Developers in Colombia?

  • Senior supply is thin. The training pipeline is large, but experienced engineers who have shipped LLM features to production are scarcer. Ask about retention and how the partner replaces someone without losing context.
  • English varies by person. Colombia scores 480 in the EF English Proficiency Index, slightly below the global average of 488. Interview the engineers who will work with you, not only the account manager.
  • Not every constraint fits. If your contract requires US-only personnel or data residency, or you need engineers in your office every day, a Colombian team will not meet that requirement.
  • Verify the company. Confirm that a partner is a registered Colombian entity in RUES before signing. The wider country picture is in the US Commerce Department’s ICT market guide.

How Fast Can You Start? From First Call to First Commit

With a partner, the path is short. Sancrisoft states that most projects begin within one to two weeks after the initial consultation (company-reported). A direct hire takes longer and varies with your own process.

  1. Consultation. Share the use case, data, and timeline. We confirm whether Colombia and our team are the right fit.
  2. Team shape and profiles. We propose roles and seniority, as in the table above, and introduce the engineers.
  3. Technical conversation. You interview the people who would do the work, in English.
  4. Contract and kickoff. We sign IP and data terms, then start with the first working slice and the day-14 review. The Medellín vendor guide has a scorecard if you are comparing partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire AI developers in Colombia?

Sancrisoft estimates $12,000–$20,000 per month, all-in, for a senior engineer and $7,000–$12,000 for a mid-level engineer, which are company figures rather than a market benchmark. Actual cost depends on seniority, stack, and engagement model.

Can a US company hire AI developers in Colombia directly?

Yes, through a Colombian entity, an employer of record or independent contractors, or through a nearshore partner. Each route carries different compliance duties, and misclassifying employees as contractors is the most common risk.

How long does it take to hire AI developers in Colombia?

With a nearshore partner, Sancrisoft states that most projects start one to two weeks after the first consultation (company-reported). Direct hiring depends on your own process and the candidate market.

Do AI developers in Colombia work US hours?

Yes. Colombia is on UTC−5 all year. It matches US Eastern in winter and US Central in summer, is zero to one hour ahead of Central, one to two hours ahead of Mountain and two to three hours ahead of Pacific, and is one hour behind Eastern during US daylight time.

Who owns the code, prompts, and models?

You do, if your contract says so. Assign code, prompts, evaluation data, and fine-tuned models to your company in writing and keep records of human authorship. Have counsel review the agreement.

Is it safe to give a nearshore team access to our data and LLM APIs?

It can be, with controls: keys and model access under your accounts, minimal personal data in prompts, documented data-processing terms, and security tests mapped to NIST and OWASP guidance.
